The State Memorial and Natural Preserve “Museum-Estate of Leo Tolstoy “Yasnaya Polyana” is located just 200 kilometers south of Moscow. A three-hour ride by bus or car from Moscow will bring you to the entrance towers that have for years been the symbol of the Yasnaya Polyana museum.
The estate of the great Russian writer Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910) was declared a museum in 1921.
Yasnaya Polyana is a phenomenon of Russia’s historic and cultural life. With its authentic buildings, surrounded by picturesque forests, orchards, and parks, it is a typical Russian estate, which will give you an insight into the every-day life and traditions of the 19 th and 20 th centuries.

On August 11-15, 2012 the State Museum-Estate of Leo Tolstoy at Yasnaya Polyana is going to host the VIII International Academic Conference Tolstoy and World Literature. Problems of Tolstoy’s work and art in the context of Russian and World Literature, philosophy, and religion are to be discussed at the sessions of the Conference. Traditionally the Conference is organised on the basis of Tolstoy’s personal library, which preserves the books and periodicals in 39 foreign languages. The Book of proceedings of the Conference will be published.
