It is the oldest building at the estate. The writer’s grandfather would live there for some time. At that time there were weaving and leather-dressing workshops in its central part. In Tolstoy’s lifetime here was a laundry, a “black kitchen” (for servants), here lived servants. The eastern wing of the house was fitted for the studio when Tatiana, Leo Tolstoy’s eldest daughter, was keen on painting.
