The Kuzminsky House

The Kuzminsky House

The house was built in the early 19 th century, in Prince Volkonsky’s time. Originally it was (as well as the Tolstoy House) a part of the architectural ensemble that consisted of three parts: a large manor house, in which Leo Tolstoy was born (it was later sold by Tolstoy) and two identical wings.

In 1859-1862 the house was used as a school, founded by Tolstoy for peasant children. Later it was named the Kuzminsky House in honour of Tolstoy’s sister-in-law Tatyana Kuzminsky, who often stayed here when she came to Yasnaya Polyana. Today the building is used for various exhibitions revealing different aspects of Tolstoy’s life and work and the history of the museum.

Current exhibition: What Is Art.
