International project “Weimar - Yasnaya Polyana – Stratford. National Cultural Heritage as a Factor of Sustainable Regional Development”
The project started in April 2006 and it has been realized on the basis of the three European cultural heritage sites connected with the names of the literary geniuses who can be considered symbols of their nations – Goethe, Shakespeare and Tolstoy.
This two-year project has a budget of 250 thousand euros, of which 200 thousand euros come from the European Commission (TACIS program).
The project was aimed to create for the Yasnaya Polyana region, where Leo Tolstoy lived and worked, a pilot model of sustainable regional development that would be based on the region’s cultural heritage and could serve a sample for other Russian regions as well. The project is realized by the International Foundation “Heritage of Leo Tolstoy”, the Culture Department of the City of Weimar (in cooperation with the Weimar Classic Foundation), and the Stratford-upon-Avon District Council (in cooperation with the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust). In the future, the Yasnaya Polyana – Weimar – Stratford triangle can become a nucleus of a wider network of cultural heritage sites.
