Samsung Electronics

Samsung electronics Co., Ltd is a world-famed leader in the field of semiconductors, telecommunication devices, digital convergence. It is also a most competitive total solution provider in memory chips, LSI and LCD systems, handsets and display devices.

Supporting of cultural, sport and social events is a key point in the company’s strategy and philosophy, and contribution to development of the society is considered to be one of its main goals.

Following the company’s tradition of sponsorship in the field of art, sport and culture (supporting the Bolshoy theatre, the State Hermitage, the Russian Journalists Union, the Olympic committee of Russia, the hockey-team “Dinamo”), since 2003 Samsung Electronics has been the sponsor of the Leo Tolstoy Literary Award “Yasnaya Polyana”.

The “Yasnaya Polyana” Literary Award

The award is given to authors of outstanding works of contemporary Russian literature that enrich and carry on the best traditions of Russian prose.

“In the process of nomination for the award, it does not matter when the book was written and whether it ever was a bestseller. A masterpiece cannot grow outdated. And I’m proud to say that today our award, inspired by Leo Tolstoy’s name, arouses such a sincere interest in Russian readers. And it’s not a surprise - the abundance of talented authors and remarkable works makes the choice of the jury hard,” - said Vladimir Tolstoy, the great-great-grandson of Leo Tolstoy, the head of jury and the director of the Leo Tolstoy Museum-estate.

“Within the last three years, thanks to the “Yasnaya Polyana ” Award, Russian readers get acquainted with outstanding Russian writers and best works of contemporary Russian prose. It’s an honor for Samsung Electronics Company to be a co-institutor of such an important project”, - said Mr. Bon Tchu Pek, the head of Samsung Electronics Russia.

In the jury of the literary award “Yasnaya Polyana” are famous Russian writers, critics, specialists in literature and public figures.

Vladimir Tolstoy, head of jury, director of the Leo Tolstoy Museum-estate “Yasnaya Polyana”;

Lev Anninsky, writer, critic, member of the Academy of Russian literature, academic of Russian Academy of Cinema, academic of Russian Academy of Theatre;

Igor Zolotussky, writer, critic, vice-president of International association “World of Culture”;

Pavel Basinsky, young writers’ prose consultant, writer, reviewer of “Literaturnaya gazeta” (“Literary Newspaper”);

Valentin Kurbatov, writer, critic, academic of Academy of Russian contemporary literature;

Vladislav Otroshenko , writer, essayist, winner of the “Yasnaya Polyana” literary award.

For the first time, the award was given at the Leo Tolstoy Museum-estate “Yasnaya Polyana” on 9 September 2003 - on 175 th birthday of Leo Tolstoy. From the very start, the prize roused a keen response in Russia due to high artistic standard of the nominated literary works.

Canadian Doukhobor Society

On September 21 2005 , on the premises of the “Yasnaya Polyana” Hotel a bakery-café was opened. This Bakery Café was developed in partnership by the Yasnaya Polyana Museum and Canadian Doukhobor Society “Friends of Leo Tolstoy”. This project started in 1999 to commemorate the centenary of the migration of Russian doukhobors to Canada . Persecuted by the tsarist government for their beliefs, the doukhobors had to leave Russia in 1899. Their departure to Canada was possible due to Leo Tolstoy’s support. A century later, the construction of the bakery–café at Yasnaya Polyana acquires special significance:

“It stands as testimony to the enduring gratitude of these Christian pacifists to Lev Nikolaevitch Tolstoy for his moral and material support in their time of need, and to the continuing friendship between the Tolstoy family and the Doukhobor community.

Formally opened in 2005, on September 21 - designated by the United Nations Organization as the International Day of Peace - this Bakery Café is dedicated to Toil and Peaceful Life.”
